Indication & Dosage
 
 
Oral
CUTANEOUS STAPHYLOCOCCAL INFECTIONS
Adult: 250 mg bid
 
Oral
STAPHYLOCOCCAL INFECTIONS
Adult: 500 mg every 8 hr, may double dose in severe infections.
 
Oral
STAPHYLOCOCCAL INFECTIONS
Child: As oral suspension: <1 yr: 15 mg/kg; 1-5 yr: 250 mg; 5-12 yr: 500 mg; >12 yr: Usual adult dose. Dose to be taken tid.
 
Intravenous
SEVERE STAPHYLOCCOCCAL INFECTIONS
Adult: >50 kg: 500 mg tid; <50 kg: 6-7 mg/kg tid. Dose to be given via slow IV infusion
 
Intravenous
SEVERE STAPHYLOCCOCCAL INFECTIONS
Child: >50 kg: 500 mg tid; <50 kg: 6-7 mg/kg tid. Dose to be given via slow IV infusion
 
Topical/Cutaneous
PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SKIN INFECTIONS CAUSED BY SUSCEPTIBLE ORGANISMS
Adult: As a 2% ointment/cream/gel: Apply onto affected area 3-4 times daily. 1% eye drops may be used for eye infections.
   
Administration

Fusidic acid: Should be taken with food.

Sodium fusidate: Should be taken with food.

   
Precautions Hepatic disease; monitor liver function. Neonates; pregnancy, lactation.
   
Adverse Drug Reactions Jaundice and liver dysfunction (reversible); GI disturbances. IV: Venospasm, thrombophloebitis and haemolysis; hypocalcaemia. SC/IM: Tissue necrosis. Topical: Rashes and irritation.
   
Interactions Synergistic action with antistaphylococcal penicillin. Antagonism with ciprofloxacin.
